Mapping the Margins is a new research project investigating how racism and discrimination affect the wellbeing of young people from Black, Asian, and racially minoritised backgrounds, with a focus on those whose experiences are rarely heard.

In 2022, one in four young adults reported a mental health issue, up from one in six the year before. Alongside social and economic pressures, discrimination has a profound influence on young people’s health and development.

Led by the Race Equality Foundation in partnership with City, St George’s, University of London, the project will work closely with two groups: young Black men with experience in the care system, and young South Asian women with physical disabilities. By engaging directly with participants, the research team hopes to uncover insights relevant to many more minoritised young people.

Workshops using photography and other creative approaches will capture lived experiences, while peer researchers and young co-investigators help shape the study throughout its two-year duration (November 2024 – January 2026). Participants will be supported with travel expenses and gift vouchers in recognition of their contributions.

The initiative is co-led by Jabeer Butt (Race Equality Foundation) and Dr Anita Mehay (City, St George’s, University of London), alongside academics, community organisations, and young people themselves. Their aim is not only to highlight challenges but also to identify solutions and possible actions for change.
